Noisy Sony Plasma PFM-42B2E fan!!! Fix/replace it!

Update:

Ok, changed 4 fans, the two fans that was hard to reach wasn’t so hard after all. But it turns out there was a fifth fan which is very difficult to change. It’s about 3,5cm on 5v laying upside down on a circuit board:

I tried connecting a laptop fan, that “worked” but was even more noisy. The fan design is very inefficient, I’ll look into finding a replacement.

After the update it is a lot quieter, but the power led in front started to blink, I’m suspecting it has to do with the screen having problems reading the speed of the fans. It is running cooler so I’m not worried :)

My plasma fans have been extremely noisy lately. It was actually louder tham my xbox 360 in-game!!! Something had to be done! Since my warranty was long gone I got my terrible electric screwdriver ($9) and removed the back panel of the plasma. All screws are marked and it didn’t take long to remove.

When I removed the panel I was met with this:

Plasma back full
4 fans and a LOT of dust… First ting was to find out what kind of fans it is. Fan 1 & 4 are very easy to remove (1 skrew)

Fan is 5cm x 5cm x 1cm, Nider 12v 0.06 amp model D05X-12TL (08B). Connection is weird connector:

Since the connector was not standard I removed it to test with another fan. I had a similar fan so I tested with that with the cables tabed together. And it worked!

Cable from power->to fan:
black -> red
brown -> yellow
red -> black

The fans are blowing upwards.

But (isn’t there always), fan 2&3 seems very difficult to replace. I cannot see a way of unskrewing without removing one of the large circuit boards:

I think these two skrews are holding the fans, but on the other fans it was a third skrew, I was not in the mood to do remove the board so I cleaned up the fans and hoped it would reduce the noise. And it did…A lot! High five!

The noise is now around what it was when it was new, it’s still pretty loud, but much better! I’m not going to change the fans right now, but if I want to do it later I know what fans to buy.

Hope you found this helpful, it might also be helpful for other plasma screens as most of them use standard computer fans. Please leave feedback here :)
